It all began in 1984…

Habitat Humanitarians, Former President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn have been champions and groundbreaking voices for affordable, decent housing for all for almost four decades. It all started when President Carter passed by a Habitat for Humanity build site while speaking at a local church in New York City. Upon noticing a shortage of volunteers, he and his wife picked up a few dozen volunteers and showed up to help renovate a six-story apartment building. This act of kindness marked the beginning of their commitment to Habitat for Humanity.

Since then, the Carters have worked alongside almost 104,000 volunteers in 14 countries to build, renovate, and repair 4,390 homes. They've inspired millions of people across the globe with their dedication and rallied thousands of volunteers and even celebrities to take part in Habitat's mission, helping the organization become internationally recognized for its work to build decent and affordable housing.

The Carters have donated their time and leadership each year to build and improve homes through Habitat's Carter Work Project, an initiative they helped create in 1984. This project brings together volunteers and sponsors to help build homes and raise awareness of the need for affordable housing. The Carters' unwavering dedication to this project has helped thousands of people realize their dream of owning a safe and affordable home.

Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter's commitment to Habitat began when she volunteered at her first build. Initially, she thought she would only be helpful with the food. However, her husband asked her and some other women to pry up some linoleum from the floor, and just before they finished, somebody brought some boards for them to nail down. That first day, she was hammering. Her ever-deepening commitment to Habitat would go on to change her life, as well as the lives of hundreds of homeowners across the globe.

“That’s one of the things Habitat has given to us: an ability to share, side by side, building a home with families that have never had a decent place to live.”

-Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter

“Habitat provides a simple but powerful avenue for people of different backgrounds to come together to achieve those most meaningful things in life. A decent home, yes, but also a genuine bond with our fellow human beings. A bond that comes with the building up of walls and the breaking down of barriers.”
